What have we been up to?
It's been busy in first grade preparing for a new teacher and helping her and the students adjust! She's wonderful and is a great addition to our team. I miss my kiddos but know they're in great hands!
An elf was delivered to our classroom. He's been helping us learn about Christmas traditions around the world. He visits different countries around the world and brings us activities to help us learn more. We find him in different places around our room each morning. It's been fun!

Visualizing
We created Green Giants using the Jack Prelutsky poem. I thought the idea was cute when I read about it on Deanna Jump's blog, and it was so concrete! It was perfect to launch mental images!

College Week at Hopkins
We celebrated "Chesterfield Goes to College" week! We learned about different colleges in Virginia. All of the teachers decorated their doors with the colleges they attended. We were very curious to find out where everyone went to college! When discussing colleges we also set goals and talked about the importance of school now in order to be able to go to our college of choice.
We ended the week with a school wide morning meeting and a parade!

We Love Fall!
Part of the 1st grade science curriculum is learning about seasonal changes. We "adopted" a tree today to follow through the seasons. We collected fall leaves and noticed different signs of fall.

What dissolves in water?
We were scientists today!
We asked the question: "What dissolves in water?"
We made hypothesis as to which solids would dissolve in water.
We tested our hypothesis and recorded the results. We found out that sugar, salt, and flour dissolve in water. Sand does not dissolve in water.
Finally, different groups shared their results! We discussed what other things may or may not dissolve.
Try different items at home!
